Why is my Reston lawn thin under the trees?

Turf under a mature canopy competes for light, water, and nutrients at once, and loses all three. Reston was laid out around its woods, so many lawns here are clearings in a forest. How much sun does tall fescue actually need?

Roughly four or more hours of direct sun, or bright filtered light under a high, thinned canopy. Tall fescue is our most shade-tolerant cool-season grass, but shade-tolerant is not shade-proof, and under four hours it cannot replace the leaf tissue you mow off.
