Why is my Reston lawn thin under the trees?
Turf under a mature canopy loses the contest for light, water, and nutrients. Oak and tulip poplar feeder roots mat the top few inches where fescue lives, so the shaded half of a yard dries out two days after rain. We see it in North Point, South Lakes, and Hunters Woods.
How much sun does tall fescue actually need?
Tall fescue needs roughly four or more hours of direct sun, or bright filtered light under a high, thinned canopy. It's our most shade tolerant grass, but shade tolerance has limits. We sort a wooded lot into ground that carries turf, ground that needs help, and ground that never will.
- Limb up low branches, thin the crown, and mow shaded zones at your mower's tallest setting.
- Feed lightly with organic based fertilizers, since the light can't support pushed growth.
What causes moss in a Reston lawn?
Moss moves in where turf has already given up, meaning too little light, compacted soil that stays damp, and low fertility. Reston has all three, plus soil that drifts acidic under conifers and leaf litter.
- Core aeration opens the compacted layer, and compost topdressing adds organic matter to the clay and helps it hold water and nutrients.
- A soil test shows whether pH is part of it.
Overseeding under a canopy takes more seed and more patience.
Shaded lawns need heavier seed rates than open lawns, applied every fall instead of once. Seedlings get less light and water and have leaf debris to push through. The fall window runs late August through October. Expect two or three falls before real density.

Shade changes which weeds you fight, and some ground under dense canopy will never hold grass.
- Japanese stiltgrass thrives in Reston's moist ground along the wood edge, where the light is low. Our weed control is timed pre-emergent plus a denser stand. Reston Association covenants address invasive species, and we can keep stiltgrass under control.
- Humid leaf litter makes mosquito and tick control matter more here than on open lots.
- Soil under a removed tree is full of wood and compaction, so a planting bed is often the wiser call.
