Where the soil is worn out, compost topdressing adds organic matter to the clay. One homeowner off Linton Hall Road came to us after two falls of DIY seeding washed out, and two seasons later his back yard, once concrete with a green tint, holds turf thick enough to stripe.
What does a fertilization program look like on builder soil?
On builder soil we feed lighter and more often, using organic based, slow release fertilizers instead of heavy synthetic nitrogen. Which weeds take advantage of thin builder turf?
Crabgrass comes first, then nutsedge and Japanese stiltgrass, and each tells you how the lot was graded. Our lawn weed control handles all three, but on thin builder turf the lasting answer is density.
- Crabgrass shows up on the sunbaked high side of a lot, so pre-emergent goes down before soil hits 55 degrees at two inches, from mid-March to early April.
- Nutsedge settles into low pockets and downspout lines that grading created to shed water off the foundation.
- Stiltgrass creeps out of wooded buffer strips between newer neighborhoods, as around Haymarket.
